(e.g., see MLPA “Size and Spacing” guidelines)
Many marine organisms have a larval stage wherein individuals are dispersed along the coast by ocean tides and currents. The distance traveled depends on larval duration, larval behavior, and oceanographic dynamics. Size and spacing guidelines were developed through the Marine Life Protection Act process based on the estimated dispersal distances of many marine organisms. This information is important when permitting projects because impacts from an activity can affect the quality of habitat available for larvae when they settle out of the water column, as well as the survival of larvae in the water column.
